ShinbashiTamakiya

FOODEX JAPAN 2026 / 2026 Japan Meat Industry Fair 50th Exports from Japan Booth number S2-J36-11
A 243-Year-Old Edo Souvenir Shop Renowned Nationwide
The origins of this famous Edo souvenir shop date back 242 years when Shichibee from Tamaki Village in Echigo Province (present-day Niigata pref.) opened a small store in Edo Katagawa-machi (now Shimbashi). He began selling "Zazen Mame," black soybeans simmered in a sweet sugar glaze.

Later, the third-generation Shichibee perfected a tsukudani recipe based on preserved fish dishes made by fishermen in Tsukuda Island. This savory delicacy gained immense popularity and became a well-known Edo specialty. During the Edo period, it was widely used as a gift by feudal lords traveling to and from Edo for their sankin-kotai (alternate attendance duty).
The shop’s popularity was so immense that wooden fences had to be set up to manage the long customer lines, which at times stretched as far as approximately 220 meters.
From its founding to the present day, the store has continued its operations in Shimbashi, preserving the pure taste and aroma of its traditional recipes.
