"Limochiso" is a unique red Shiso variety with a distinct lemon scent, developed by Professor Michiho Ito (then of Kyoto University) after 27 years of dedicated research.
Shiso has long been an essential part of Japanese life, both as a traditional medicinal herb and a staple of Japanese cuisine. Now, a one-of-a-kind variety with a natural lemon aroma joins this heritage.
Professor Ito discovered that under specific conditions, "perillaldehyde" (the typical aroma component of Shiso) could be replaced by "citral," the essence of lemon scent. Through years of meticulous cross-breeding via self-pollination and selecting seedlings with the strongest citrus notes, she achieved a breakthrough.
27 years after the research began, this lemon-scented Shiso was officially registered as a brand-new variety.
